RAPTOR ECOLOGY EDUCATION

Suggested educational elements for a complete raptor experience:

Teachers and students may access this website for edu-cational materials from BIRDS OF PREY NORTHWEST. These materials contain information preparing students with some knowledge of raptors as well as the birds that will visit.

Students should be introduced to raptors in advance by their teachers and have a basic knowledge of these birds.
Reading a book such as, "Arrowhawk," by Lola M. Schaefer and Gabi Swiatkowska, will initiate dialogue and understanding.

Students need to understand a basic protocol for a live demonstration of birds of prey. The audience needs to remain seated and be quiet as the birds are shy, wild creatures, tethered to their handler.

Small audiences provide a better experience for the students and the birds.

The program fee is $300 for a one-hour presentation with live eagles, hawks, owls and falcons.

Preferred audience size is under 70 students. Multiple programs may be provided for an additional $100, in order to provide a more personal experience. We emphasize eco- systems, the important role of predators, and the impact of human activity on birds of prey.

Basic requirements:
We require doorways that are 39 inches wide to admit traveling kennels housing the birds. An eight-foot table is needed to present the birds during the program.  A cool and quiet environment is best for the comfort and security of the birds.

All of the educational birds are held on United States Fish and Wildlife Service permits. These allow them to serve as magnificent ambassadors for their free-flying counterparts as they help children discover the wonder of nature!
